Office jobs in Australia: A market update

by Clare Johnson
-
17 January 2019

All manner of industries require the skills of office support workers. From finance and marketing to legal and retail, office support jobs are available across the board around Australia. For those with skills in this area, this can mean following the job opportunities as they arise, no matter the sector, or specialising in one industry that holds a particular interest to them.

Page Personnel has been helping find the right match between companies and office support workers in Australia for more than 40 years. With this vast industry background and knowledge, we are often amongst the first to know when a new position becomes available, giving us – and therefore our clients and job seekers – an edge over the competition.

Take a look at our overview of what’s happening in the office support industry in Australia at the moment, which roles are in demand, and what the sector may look like in years to come.

Australia’s current office support industry

In 2018, our Job Outlook shows that there were 231,500 general clerk roles in Australia, which are widespread across numerous industries, and found in locations all over the country. For those working full-time hours, these roles generally earned $1,000 per week, although that figure increases with added experience.

Women currently hold the lion’s share of office support roles, holding 85.4 per cent of the available positions.

Office support roles in demand

According to the Australian Jobs 2018 Report, a variety of industries are seeing high demand for general clerks. With more than 1.6 million employees working in the clerical and administrative area, this is one of the largest occupation groups in the country. The top five positions are: general clerks, receptionists, accounting clerks, office managers, and contract, program and project administrator roles.

The future outlook for office support jobs in Australia

As a wide range of industries around Australia continue to grow, more and more office support positions will become available, as seen in the 2017 Salary & Employment Outlook. These areas include legal, engineering, digital, not-for-profit, construction, and tech.

Entry-level positions across these sectors are expected to increase, which could be good news for those just starting out in office support positions.

Additionally, our Job Outlook research suggests the number of general clerks will grow over the next five years to 2023, with approximately 182,000 job openings in that time. These will be available thanks to former employees retiring or moving to new jobs, as well as new positions being created.

If you’re ready to take the step into an office support role, get in touch with us at Page Personnel. We’d love to talk to you about current opportunities that would help you reach your future career goals.
